LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — A free community yoga class kicked off its summer series in Lexington on Sunday.
“Ashland Yoga” is a weekly event held on the lawns of Ashland Estates from June through October.
Ashland Yoga instructor Lissa Sims said the class has been held under a tree just outside Ashland every summer for nine years.
“Sure, you can do yoga alone, but nothing beats dancing with other people. If you’ve ever danced alone in your kitchen or at a wedding, you know what I’m talking about. Both are great, but sharing the experience feels good,” Sims says.
Sims said the event is intended to build unity in Lexington as well as bring healing and relaxation.
“It’s outdoors, so there’s less pressure! There are no mirrors, and there’s no ‘right’ way to look when doing different poses. We’re just moving together in a way that feels good. Plus, there’s a lot of research that shows being outdoors can make you feel better.”
The free classes will be held every Sunday at 11 a.m. until the summer series ends on October 10th.
Sims said the dress code is “wear what you feel comfortable in and can move around in freely,” and that for anyone who wants to take part but doesn’t have a yoga mat, a large towel would be fine.
