Effective Aug. 1, Troy University’s College of Health and Human Services will be renamed the College of Health Sciences.
The change was approved by the university’s board of trustees earlier this year to more clearly reflect the university’s current and future programs. The new name coincides with the completion of Jones Hall, the university’s new home on the Troy campus. The building is named in honor of Troy alumnus Billy Jones and his wife, Frances. Jones is the founder and CEO of Crown Health.
“We are excited about the growth and promise of programs that lead to careers in the health sciences,” said Dr. Kelly Palmer, senior vice president for academic affairs. “Under Dean LaGaree Carter’s leadership, I am confident that the innovation and collaboration will continue to emerge from this college and attract new students to Troy. ‘College of Health Sciences’ accurately and succinctly reflects the university’s forward-thinking, practical mission.”
For the university, which was founded in 1994 and is home to the School of Nursing, School of Social Welfare and Human Services, and School of Kinesiology and Health Promotion, the name change represents a kind of “rebirth.”
“Renaming the School of Health and Human Services to the School of Health Sciences is a concise and comprehensive representation of our current and future academic programs,” said Dr. Carter, who is in his second year as dean. “We are reinventing ourselves as a comprehensive academic unit with new program proposals on the horizon. The School of Health Sciences also reflects the evidence-based, experiential training students will receive in the new Jones Hall Health Sciences Center. We are honored by the success of our graduates and look forward to what our current students will accomplish in the future. We are confident that our alumni will continue to support and contribute as ambassadors for the new School of Health Sciences.”
