Free Prostate Cancer Screening Event at NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens

About 40 men, including hospital staff, will be screened for prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men, so early detection is important.

July 30, 2024

Queens, New York — NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens proudly announced the success of a recent free prostate cancer screening event held on July 19th. During the event, 38 men, including several hospital employees, received PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) testing. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men, making early detection important. Black men are more likely to receive late-stage diagnoses, making early screening even more important. The event was part of NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens’ Stage Zer0 initiative, which aims to reduce late-stage cancer diagnoses through early screening, detection, and treatment. The Stage Zer0 initiative provides proactive steps to recognize and mitigate racial disparities in cancer outcomes among diverse racial and ethnic groups. The initiative seeks to achieve health equity and optimal care for all individuals affected by cancer by focusing on early detection, preventative measures, equitable access to health care, and community engagement. The CDC recommends that men ages 55-69 talk to their doctor about prostate cancer screening.

This effort is supported by Mount Sinai’s Robert F. Smith Prostate Cancer Screening Mobile Unit, the event’s key visual, which is committed to enabling early detection of prostate cancer in at-risk Black men. Made possible through a generous donation from Robert F. Smith, founder, chairman and CEO of Vista Equity Partners, the mobile unit delivers state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging equipment and expert staff directly to communities that need it most.

“We are thrilled with the community’s response to our free screening event.” Neil J. Moore, MBA, MPA, FACHE, CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens“By offering these essential screenings, we are taking an important step toward reducing late-stage cancer diagnoses and promoting health equity. We are grateful for the support and dedication of the staff at Mount Sinai’s Robert F. Smith Prostate Cancer Mobile Screening Mobile Unit.”

Dr. Dave Holson, chief medical officer for NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens“The PSA tests administered at this event are an important tool in the early detection of prostate cancer. This initiative underscores our commitment to providing equitable cancer care services and ensuring that all members of our community have access to life-saving testing and treatment,” he added.

NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens is home to the award-winning Queens Cancer Center, which offers comprehensive cancer care services from diagnosis to treatment and survivorship support. Queens Cancer Center is known for excellence in patient care and its commitment to eliminating health disparities in the community. Cancer screening requires a referral from your primary care physician. To learn more about services offered by Queens Cancer Center, call (718) 883-4133.
