- Mr. Maher and Mr. Michaels disagreed about the state of the U.S. economy on Sunday’s “Club Random” podcast.
- Maher compared America to a “stupid but strong” teenage boy, “just having fun.”
Fitness influencer Jillian Michaels told comedian Bill Maher to “buy some fucking eggs” after he claimed on his podcast that inflation is “not insane”.
Michaels and Maher were discussing the state of the U.S. economy post-pandemic on their podcast “Club Random” on Sunday.
When Mr. Maher said he didn’t think inflation was hitting the country that hard, Mr. Michaels said, “Bill, go buy a car and the house here has tripled. Buy it!” he replied.
The price of a carton of 12 eggs has soared from $1.40 in 2019 to $2.51 this year, after peaking at more than $4 last year.
A recent survey shows that even though prices are lower now, weekly shopping still costs much more than it did before the pandemic, and Americans are feeling anxious when shopping at the grocery store. It turned out that there was.
The annual inflation rate in January was 3.1%, 0.2 percentage points higher than expected.
Americans now spend $125.51 on groceries, which would have cost $100 in December 2019, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Still, Maher insisted that “this country has emerged from the pandemic better.” We won the pandemic economically. ”
Michaels replied: I don’t feel that way. Explain. I feel like inflation is abnormal. ”
Maher said that while Americans may be very worried about inflation, the actual numbers aren’t that bad.
He said, “There are emotions and then there are numbers.” Over the past six months, that number has dropped significantly. ”
Optimism about the U.S. economy rose 10% this month, according to the University of Michigan’s Consumer Confidence Index, which surveys people’s attitudes about personal finances and spending.
It was the largest monthly increase since 2005 and the highest level since July 2021.
Maher argued that inflation was caused by a “massive overreaction.”
He said, “We gave away $6 trillion so everyone could hide under their beds from the eternal flu.” It was never going to end well. ”
He added: “The big picture is that every other country in the world… [is] Things are even worse now, but this country is somehow just chugging along.
‘Immigration. We’re a little overwhelmed. It doesn’t seem to affect anything!
But Michaels responded, “Will it eventually fall apart?” Will there be straws too? I think so. ”
Maher believes America is like a “stupid but strong” teenage boy who drives over the speed limit, saying that despite the risks, “so far we’re having a good time.” Ta.
But Michaels remains unconvinced, adding: “Some of it I think we’ll get away with, but some of it we won’t.”
