Cats seem to be naturally attracted to people who practice yoga. They may stretch their bodies as if imitating yoga asanas, or they may fall on the floor and open their stomachs to be stroked.
Because of this cat trait, Yoga With Cats classes began to spread around the world. Some cat experts claim that yoga and some martial arts were invented based on careful observation of cat behavior.
Cats on Mat reopens in Crawford County
The Humane Society and many other organizations serving Crawford County introduced the Cats on Mat Yoga series to the community several years ago, and now, post-pandemic, they are bringing it back.
“We decided it was the perfect time to start things up again and are now doing cats on mats and laps,” shelter manager Hannah Shafer said.
Class instructor Kay Smith said she came up with the idea after hearing about other communities holding similar events.
Proceeds from the event will be split equally between the Humane Society and Smith.
Smith said the class is a fun event that brings people together to spend quality time together in a friendly environment where pets may roam.
She said she also holds similar events for seniors in the area.
A fun opportunity to enjoy family time
Erin Ross attended the Humane Society’s first post-pandemic yoga event on Saturday with her two daughters, Nora, 9, and Charlotte, 7. She said it would be a fun event to attend with her daughters.
“My oldest daughter is very interested in animals,” Ross said.
Nora said she attended Cats on the Mat before the pandemic and remembers it being fun. She said she was playing with her cats at the time. Nora said she doesn’t have any cats at home, but there are nine cats in the barn next door.
Charlotte spent most of her yoga class chasing cats. It turns out that the young cats attending the event (Mango, Yoda, Heather, Moon, and Midnight) are not very sociable.
The next “Cats on Mats” and “Cats on Laps” events are scheduled for February 24th, March 2nd, March 16th, April 13th, and April 27th.
Tuition is $10. If a participant wants to take home a pet, she will receive a 15% discount on pet adoption.
