The South Asian country of Bhutan has announced plans to build a 1,000 square kilometer “Mindfulness City” near the town of Gelephu, not far from the Indian border. A series of habitable bridges woven between the area’s natural rivers and streams include Eastern and Western medical facilities, greenhouses, a spiritual center, and an airport. A mandala-shaped neighborhood will surround the public space.
According to a press release from the Kingdom of Bhutan, Gelephu Mindfulness City aims to sustainably build a modern city that exists in harmony with Bhutan’s biodiversity, attracting tourists to the small country while also supporting its residents. This is an initiative to promote “individual happiness.”
