Professors from the Institute of Applied Dermatology (IAD), which runs a filaria network and patient support group, shared insights into their work under the guidance of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the Health Ministry on Sunday.
The IAD centre, set up at the Regional Ayurvedic Institute in Indiranagar, Lucknow, offers various effective care modalities for filariasis patients, including yoga and pranayama.
Sandeep Kumar, yoga consultant at IAD, cited the case of 55-year-old Ganga Prasad, a resident of Chatta Meal on Sitapur Road, who was forced to close his grocery shop due to filariasis in both his legs, but since incorporating yoga into his treatment plan, Prasad’s condition has improved significantly.
Similarly, Sudha Devi, 34, from Kanpur reported that daily exercise has significantly reduced the swelling in her feet. “11 months ago, the district health officer introduced her to yoga and exercise during a training session. Since then, she has been practicing daily and taking good care of her feet. The biggest benefit is that she can now wear the anklets and do her household chores with ease,” he added.
Sandeep Kumar explained that their treatment protocol includes micro-exercises, asanas, pranayama, mudras and savasana.
Coordinator Bibhu Raj Kumar said filariasis adversely affects the lymphatic system, causing lymphatic fluid to build up and swelling in the affected organs. Regular yoga and exercise helps reduce swelling and improve lymphatic function. He stressed the importance of prevention, pointing out that filariasis, which is spread through the bite of Culex mosquitoes, can take five to 15 years to develop. As there is no effective treatment, prevention remains key.
