The gentle sounds of music transport you to a place of peace. The gentle movements of dance fill you with joy as you move through the space. You feel free and amazing. This is the Kirtan/Yoga Dance class experience. Our most recent class was held on June 12th at 2:30pm in Room 202 of the Wildcat Center Studio. Stay tuned for our next class!
“This class is free-flowing and there’s no specific structure to where you have to be here and do this,” said Kaylee Driver, Group X instructor at Weber State University. “Just go with the flow and listen to what your body is calling. This class is low-key so just come as you are. We’re all human and we’re all here to hold space for each other.”
Kirtan/Yoga Dance combines mantra chanting, small yoga movements, slow breathing techniques and free dance to relax and energize participants. The instructor will also explain the meaning of the mantra chanting, so beginners and advanced practitioners can participate with ease.
“Kirtan/yoga dance exceeded my expectations,” said Malkata Havlova, a participant in the kirtan dance experience. “People have to feel it. They have to try it.”
The underlying theme of most chants is peace and love within oneself. These are universal concepts that can be understood and embraced by people of all faiths. Kirtan/Yoga Dance is for everyone.
“I got my initial certification in 2018 and then recertified last year to include kirtan/yoga dance. Since then, I’ve been incorporating kirtan/yoga dance more into my teaching. Kirtan/yoga dance has always been in my heart, but this past year has given me the tools to share that experience with others,” Driver said.
Driver wants her students to be open and authentic. She emphasizes the importance of being vulnerable and expressing yourself however you choose. Classes include time to sing and dance without judgment. Driver also teaches power yoga flow classes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, listening to her students’ energy and incorporating what they need.
