Wellness Heaven / RAD co+lab

Textual description provided by the architect. Nestled in a vibrant neighborhood off Carter Road in Mumbai, India, an old house stands as a testament to the evolution of time and the ever-changing urban landscape. This relic of the past has witnessed the emergence of towering skyscrapers as the city around it continues to change.

Over the years, it has grown and adapted, accepting permanent expansions that blend seamlessly with the original structure. A staircase made of pink Paroda stone visually proves the harmonious juxtaposition of old and new. The attached kitchen and toilet also became part of the story.

We were introduced to this home when it was chosen as the canvas for a wellness space, a sanctuary in the heart of urban chaos. The building required many repairs. The idea of a “palimpsest” was born. This term aptly summarizes the interwoven layers of history, purpose, and materials that create a unique experience. We used this opportunity to continue the layering act by building on top of and around the house.

This space appears as a beacon of tranquility in a bustling neighborhood. Enter through a guided cobblestone path surrounded by landscape on both sides. There is a small body of water at the entrance. Natural textures envelop the space, immersing visitors in a tactile and sensory oasis. The core of the wellness center is anchored in the ruins, a fragment of time that embodies the essence of the entire space. The weathered brick walls were intentionally exposed to enclose the classroom. The space will feature a seamless blend of programs including a yoga studio, cabins, private yoga classes, retail space, and even a juice bar. The yoga space occupies an extension of this home made of bamboo details and jute scallop shells. Visibility is unobstructed by the old trees that surround the site through the transparent ceiling, allowing shaded natural light to flood the space.
