All in all, her mega-stardom is a far cry from her small-town origins: “In a world where there are nepobabies, I came from nothing,” Mattel reflected in a new interview. Elle“I [from] I was from the poorest family in a small town. I grew up in a trailer house with six family members. I had very low expectations of what I could do because even when I went to college and got my first job, I felt like I was well off. I felt successful enough to be able to pay the bills.”

Mattel had its first big break. Drag RacingDespite losing in the first season, she won in season three. Drag Race All Stars“For me, drag isn’t about waiting for other people to tell me that my time has come,” Mattel said. “It’s not about waiting for other people to give me chairs and flowers and say, ‘You’re a star now.’ I’ve never felt like I needed that kind of validation. I’ve always believed in myself.”
But after all that fame, Mattel is understandably looking to cut back. “I can’t do this anymore,” she says. “I’m going to be taking three or four months off — July, August, September, October. I’m not going to be on social media, so I’m really going to be gone for a while.”
Mattel probably won’t be coming back in the same capacity as before. “I don’t think we’re going to see Trixie come back at full speed again,” she says. “We can’t have the Trixie that we know and see in the YouTube videos and the show and the TV show anymore. We need to step back quite a bit on this giant rat wheel that’s been going around for so long.”
“So, to be honest with you, I’m going to get to a stage where people are going to be like, ‘You’re everywhere. How do you do it?’ I’m just overworking myself. I want a family, I want a life and I haven’t got that yet. I’ll probably grow a beard.”
While this is bad news for some, Mattel joked that there will be plenty of queens celebrating the hiatus. “Plus, all these other drag queens have been waiting years for me to hang up my heels,” she said. “They’re so happy when I’m out of shape. Those bitches are so happy when I’m out of shape. They’re so happy.”
Trixie Mattel may be taking an extended break from drag, but we’ll still be seeing her on screen for a while longer. Trixie Motel: Drag Me Home It’s currently available on Max.
