MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Alabama Department of Corrections is partnering with a community college to reduce barriers for those looking to start a career as a corrections officer.
Applicants for the position of prison officer: JOIN ACTIVATEa program to help meet physical and educational requirements free of charge. WHNT Report.
The program is a partnership between ADOC and the Alabama Community College System (ACCS).
Participants who complete the ACTIVATE program can earn up to nine credits at no cost at an Alabama community college and also prepare for careers at a correctional academy or ADOC, WHNT reported.
The ACTIVATE program is funded by the Alabama State Legislature.
“There are many applicants who want to become well-trained correctional officers and serve our state, but they need extra help to achieve that goal. The ACTIVATE program is a great step toward ensuring their success and the success of Alabama’s correctional facilities,” said Alabama Department of Corrections Commissioner John Q. Hamm. It said in a statement.
ACCS has provided more than six free public safety training classes to active police officers throughout the state, and more than 1,200 officers have completed required credits in a variety of subjects at Alabama community and technical colleges.
