According to the ADA, more than 8 million people with diabetes in the United States are dependent on insulin, and 3 in 10 of them use Eli Lilly products. The pharmaceutical company announced that it was running out of two of his insulin products: Humalog and insulin lispro injection. “We recognize that any supply issues can cause disruption to people’s treatment plans and are working with urgency to address them,” the company said in a statement.
“This is a big problem. I’ve been practicing for several years and I was surprised that this problem actually exists. What the WHO calls essential medicines like insulin are life-saving drugs,” Abu said.・Dr. Limon said.
This is not the first shortage diabetics have faced this year. Ozempic, a type 2 treatment, is more widely used for weight loss. Due to the lack of insulin treatment, some people switch brands of insulin, which can have its own negative effects.
“Changing the brand, filler, or other ingredients in insulin pens or vials may cause patients to develop allergies,” Dr. Abu Limon said.
While this is not the case in most cases, there are major concerns about accessibility for those who need the product. For most insureds, insurance only covers certain products.
“Insurance preferences. This means the patient may be on one type of insulin…If things go well and everything is under control, the new year begins and insurance preferences may change and, in some cases, create a gap,” said Dr. Abu Limon. .
This not only affects diabetic patients but also endocrinologists, who usually are responsible for the search for new drugs for their patients.
