“Wrap before you tap.” We’ve all heard it before.
Condoms and other contraceptives help prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and infections. However, condoms do not protect against all sexually transmitted diseases that can be spread through skin-to-skin contact, such as herpes, genital warts, syphilis, and MPO.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 2.5 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis were reported in the United States in 2022.
Humboldt’s Student Health Center provides information and counseling in a safe and confidential environment. We offer PAP smears, breast exams, other sexual health exams, pregnancy tests, and even medication abortions. The health center also provides screening, testing, and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). When it comes to staying safe, we also offer many contraceptive options, including long-acting contraceptives, oral contraceptives, patches, rings, and condoms.
If you are concerned about privacy regarding your sexual health and need resources, you can sign up for a Family Agreement Card and access these services directly at your health center.
Cal Poly Humboldt also has a Peer Health Education Center within the Recreation and Wellness Center (RWC). We offer free harm reduction supplies, a full range of condoms, emergency contraceptives, Narcan and test strips, menstrual products and more.
There are many ways to maintain sexual health. Practice consent. Remember, an enthusiastic and informed yes means yes. Communicate with your partner, explore your body, discover what you like and share it with your partner. Stay safe and protect yourself and your partner from sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies.
The most important thing is to get tested and understand the risks of unprotected sex. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and communicate with your partner.
