Holidays like Father’s Day can be especially hard for people who have lost loved ones, but Serna Solutions has a strategy to help: Serna Solutions provides outpatient counseling services to people in Northern New Mexico struggling with mental health issues.
Brian Serna, owner and CEO of Serna Solutions, explains that fathers play a key role in the outcome, noting that 90 percent of homeless or runaway children grew up in fatherless homes. For those in that situation, Father’s Day can be an emotionally tough day. “Sometimes you have to rely on other people to fill that role,” Serna says.
Serna says it’s important to look at the mix of people who make up the “father figure” role — from coaches to teachers to other relatives — and thank those who step up rather than trying to fit them into a traditional mold.
Serna encourages facing your emotions and taking care of yourself on tough days. “When you’re not feeling great, sometimes you just need someone to tell you it’s OK, you’re strong enough, you can get through this, and I’m on your side — and we can say that to ourselves,” Serna says. “And if you can’t get that in life, relying on yourself is sure to give you that.”
Serna Solutions offers counseling in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Rio Rancho and Los Alamos. To learn more about Serna Solutions and their services, click here.
