ERIE COUNTY, Ohio (WOIO) – An Erie County woman is facing identity theft charges after police say she stole the identities of at least two women to pose as a nurse and a physical therapist. Ta.
“911, where is the emergency?” the dispatcher asked.
“I’m a manager at a McDonald’s, and a car came through the drive-thru and handed a note to an employee,” a manager at a McDonald’s in Margaretta Township told a dispatcher.
“I’ll read it to you,” said another McDonald’s employee. She wrote, “There was a man holding a gun to her daughter’s head in her back seat in her seat.” If she didn’t give him all the money in her withdrawal, he would take her away. It will kill you.”
McDonald’s employees were horrified. She even recognized the woman as her regular customer and local nurse, but as it turned out, the whole thing was a hoax.
Amanda Maynard Murphy, 33, admitted she made it all up because she needed the money. She was found guilty of theft by deception.
If the Sandusky woman hadn’t committed that crime in September, she might have been able to get away with it even longer by posing as a health care worker.
“Are you a white female driver?” the dispatcher asked.
“Yes, a white woman,” the McDonald’s employee replied. “She’s still wearing her nurse’s scrubs and also has a stethoscope around her neck.
Her mug shot was tipped off to Noms Healthcare in Perkins Township, and they realized the physical therapist might not be who she said she was.
Detective Joseph Rotondo of the Perkins County Police Department is the lead investigator on the case.
“I was shocked,” Detective Rotondo said. “Why does this name sound familiar? And then I realized that this is the same woman who did the McDonald’s incident. So I was like, well, literally about a week ago, I robbed the local McDonald’s. How the hell was she a physical therapist when she went out trying to do that?”
19 Investigators spoke with the employee who reported Maynard Murphy to the Ohio State Commission.
He said the alleged fraudster started working as a physical therapist in November 2023, but some patients had complained that appointments looked strange.
Detective Rotondo said he was using the physical therapist license number of another woman with the same name who lives in Ohio.
She also allegedly stole the Social Security number of another woman in North Carolina.
Maynard Murphy was charged with two felony counts of identity theft. She maintained her innocence.
“None of the places she worked were there very long,” Rotondo explained. “That’s the other thing that baffles us. She goes through a lot of effort to go through these background checks to get in, go through orientation to get hired, and then she Because I’m spending two weeks and seven days with no shows, no calls.”
Detectives told 19 investigators that Maynard Murphy visited at least six medical facilities across four Ohio counties: Erie, Sandusky, Ashland and Ottawa from May 2023 to December 2023. He said he was posing as a nurse and physical therapist.
Parkview Nursing Home in Sandusky was one of them.
Rotondo said she treated about 30 patients while posing as a licensed registered nurse.
“She has the authority to provide scripts and controlled drugs,” Rotondo said. “Do you know if that actual drug was administered to that patient? If someone is bedridden and doesn’t know what’s going on, she logs out ready to get two OxyContins.” Did the patient actually receive them? Again, perhaps another possible MO as to why she did this.”
Rotondo said he defrauded at least one patient at Legend Recovery in Green Springs, Ohio, out of money for an apartment that didn’t exist.
When authorities arrested Maynard Murphy, she was wearing scrubs and had a stethoscope around her neck.
“What was even crazier at that point was the fact that on the day she was arrested, we found out that she was not employed by any nursing home or facility.”
19 Investigation revealed that the woman had a history of fraud in Florida. Those involved in her investigation say she may have done similar things before in other states.
Additionally, Detective Rotondo discovered that this young woman created a fake obituary and stole the real obituary of a young woman named Amanda Murphy, who was murdered in 2014, and that the obituary was linked directly to her Cash App account. He said he was doing so.
“As I watched, she was trying to scam people out of money. And she also had sentencing coming up in the Erie County case and the McDonald’s case, and I had no idea what she was hearing. According to her, she thinks she could be sentenced to six months in prison.” Put her in jail for that,” Rotondo explained. So, by faking her death and hoping that the case will be over, our case will also be over. ”
Detective Rotondo said he spent about a week in jail after being arrested for identity theft, but was released due to overcrowding. Still, he said, she is currently working on a further warrant against her and that she should be locked up again in the coming weeks.
