PHCC Program Expands, Adds New Tools and Learning Opportunities for Health Communicators
BETHESDA, Md., May 29, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Public Health Communications Collaborative (PHCC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Amanda Kwon, MPH, as its first director. Kwon has extensive experience at the intersection of communications and public health and is passionate about using effective communication to inform, clarify, and build trust within communities.
Founded in 2020, PHCC is focused on meeting the needs of the thousands of compassionate and dedicated professionals who are on the frontlines of communicating important public health information to their communities. With Kwon’s appointment, PHCC will expand the tools, learning opportunities and professional community it offers health communicators.
Inspired by her mother’s work in crisis communications, Kwon has dedicated her career to impactful storytelling and relationship building. After graduating from Syracuse University, she worked in advertising in New York City and eventually moved to the Ad Council, where she managed over 15 campaigns, including the iconic Smokey Bear Wildfire Safety Campaign.
Kwon and her partners at the COVID Collaborative played a pivotal role in addressing public questions about the COVID-19 vaccine as they worked on the COVID-19 Vaccine Education Campaign, the Ad Council’s largest public service campaign in history, with a focus on empowering Black/African American communities with culturally relevant and trustworthy information. She holds a Master of Public Health degree in Health Leadership from the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Since assuming her role as PHCC Director in March, Kwon has actively engaged with the community, acknowledging the impact PHCC has had and the changing environment in which it operates since its founding in 2020. She is committed to continuing to deliver timely, science-based messaging and expanding PHCC’s resources to address emerging public health threats, combat misinformation, and address large-scale public health challenges.
“My vision is to design each function at PHCC with the needs of our community in mind,” says Amanda, “and to expand resources and learning opportunities so public health professionals can play their vital role.”
This year, PHCC is revamping its materials and website to better meet changing needs, and this summer it is launching the consortium’s first-of-its-kind training and skills development program, the PHCC Academy. In supportive learning groups, PHCC hopes to strengthen the entire public health communications ecosystem by equipping health care workers with the skills they need to communicate effectively with the communities they serve.
