DAYTON — A local college student will be working at the Montgomery County Jail.

Montgomery County Sheriff Rob Streck announced the partnership with local universities, including Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine, according to a Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson.
“This partnership is an important step toward increasing access to mental health services for inmates, as well as engaging community partners on initiatives that impact the well-being of inmates in our custody and the community at large. It supports our efforts to work together,” the sheriff said. Stretch.
This is a collaboration between the Montgomery County Jail and NaphCare.

NaphCare’s psychiatry services will be enhanced by several fourth-year psychiatry residents.
Dr. Brian Merrill said, “This experience will expand our education by providing residents with an opportunity to provide services to incarcerated people while meeting service needs in the community.” ” he said. “We hope to expand this partnership to include additional training programs and medical students on the treatment team.”

Students will help provide psychiatric services to inmates as demand for psychological support increases.
An estimated 44% of inmates experience mental illness, according to a report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
The sheriff’s office says the collaboration represents a commitment to addressing mental health issues in the criminal justice system.
