BRIDGEPORT, WV (WDTV) – Adults need exercise to stay healthy, but it can be hard to find the time when living busy lives. Physical therapists from United Rehabilitation at United Hospital Center join us to answer your questions about adult exercise.
I’m Dr. Kristen Sepp, a physical therapist with United Rehabilitation, and today I want to talk to you about the importance of physical activity for adults.
1). Does physical activity make adults feel better immediately?
Yes, physical activity boosts your mood, improves focus, reduces stress and improves sleep — simply getting active can help you feel better today.
2). How much exercise does an adult need?
* Aim for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week. Any activity that gets your heart rate up counts.
* Do muscle strengthening exercises at least 2 days a week. Do exercises that work your muscles harder than usual. If you feel you don’t have the time, start with 5 minutes. Adding in small increments will make a big difference.
3) So what’s the big deal?
It’s simple: Anything you do to move your body counts towards your physical activity minutes for the day. Things you already do every day, like walking the dog or folding laundry, count. Staying physically active can help you live a longer, healthier life. It can lower your risk of diseases like type 2 diabetes and some cancers. It can also help control your blood pressure and maintain a healthy weight. So take the first step and be a little more active every day.
