Xbox head Phil Spencer says the company isn’t ready to say goodbye to physical games.
Speaking with Stephen Totilo, Spencer was asked about the future of Xbox and only releasing consoles with disk drives.
Spencer said the company intends to follow “what consumers are doing” who are currently purchasing games digitally. But he made no attempt to close the lid on physical games remaining part of Xbox’s future, even though hardware has become more difficult to obtain.
“The game console itself appears to have become the last consumer electronic device with a drive.” Spencer said. “And this is a serious problem in terms of the number of manufacturers that are actually making the drives and the costs associated with that. And when you think about the gear that goes into the console, the suppliers also There are also fewer buyers, so the cost of the drive has an impact.
“But our strategy doesn’t depend on people moving completely digitally. And removing the physical is not strategic for us.”
For now, Xbox offers options for those who want or don’t need a disc drive. PlayStation also offers a similar service, and it looks like this trend is coming to an end.
