TEXARKANA, Ark. (KTAL/KMSS) — All Abilities is a Texarkana-based organization that provides training programs for people with cognitive or physical disabilities.
“We want to open up fitness, sports, basketball and other extracurricular activities to everyone,” said owner Whitney Allen.
Not only is it suitable for all abilities, but it also caters for a range of ages and interests.
“We have athletes interested in powerlifting, swimming and cheerleading,” Allen said.
They also started a basketball team and after just a few practices they were able to win third place at the Arkansas Special Olympics.
“So we’re really excited and we started practicing this summer for next basketball season. Our team is really excited about basketball,” Allen said.
The benefits are said to go beyond physical health.
“So it helps relieve stress, stay on your own and keep your mind clear,” says Ron Seay, an All Abilities athlete.
But one of their biggest focuses is developing the social skills that come with playing sports.
“It’s great to feel like you’re part of a team. Training here involves a lot of teamwork. We do a lot of team exercises. We do a lot of relay races. It’s important to cheer each other on and feel like someone is cheering for you,” Allen says.
In the end, it’s a rewarding job for everyone involved.
“All the guys here are always in a good mood. They never come here not wanting to work hard. They’re always encouraging each other and encouraging me,” Allen said. “So even if I have a bad day, it’s OK. I come here and everyone is so motivated to work and it’s really inspiring.”
They work closely with other local organizations such as Texarkana Resources and Opportunities Inc. Texarkana.
They are always looking for people to volunteer their time and donate equipment.
