NEWPORT — Northeast Kingdom Human Services (NKHS) has acquired land on Lakemont Road for the establishment of a mental health emergency care program named Front Porch. The specialist facility will provide an alternative to the emergency department for people in the Northeast Kingdom experiencing suicidal thoughts or mental health concerns.
The effort to create a 24/7 mental health facility began several years ago, spearheaded by Betty and Chris Barrett of Newport City. Their personal experiences with suicide and mental health issues encouraged them to advocate for a therapeutic environment with professional support.

Their efforts in collaboration with NKHS and Executive Director Kelsey Stafseth led to widespread community support and attracted the attention of local legislators, law enforcement, health care facilities, and the governor’s office.
In 2023, the program was funded in Governor Scott’s budget, allowing NKHS to secure the Lakemont property.
The program aims to reduce emergency department visits due to mental health concerns by providing a community-based environment that is welcoming, voluntary, and safe. This will provide an alternative for law enforcement and first responders dealing with mental health crises, and walk-in support will also be available. The facility will focus on assessing and assisting individuals in distress, thereby relieving pressure on other service providers.
Renovations are underway to create treatment space, with plans to hire staff and develop a comprehensive program. NKHS plans to open the facility in early summer.
