MORGANTOWN — On Friday, July 26, 10 high school interns gave a graduation presentation to Mon Health System leadership to graduate from The Education Alliance’s WV Ready summer internship program.
The WV Ready Summer Internship Program began in summer 2019 as a four-week paid internship program created by the Education Alliance to place high school juniors and seniors in West Virginia businesses. Since then, the program has transitioned to include in-person, hybrid and virtual internship experiences, reducing geographic barriers and allowing more students across the state to participate. This year’s summer internship program placed 30 interns from Cabell, Harrison, Kanawha, Lewis, Mason, Monongalia, Preston, Putnam and Wayne counties in four West Virginia businesses. The effort is funded by grants from the American Power Foundation, Rural Action Inc. and Toyota West Virginia, and provides internship experiences for students to help them advance their careers. “WV Ready Graduates” Gain the knowledge and skills you need to be successful after high school.
Mon Health’s WV Ready Summer Internship Program consisted of three main components: on-site work-learning experiences, mentoring, and a capstone project. To enhance their career awareness, interns participated in weekly on-site work-learning experiences and mentoring meetings with various departments across the Mon Health System. Interns explored various departments, from oncology and cardiology to environmental and nutritional services, to gain a deeper understanding of the ins and outs of a functioning hospital system.
To complete their internship, Mon Health interns created a video showing what a day in the life of a patient is like, which was presented as part of a graduation presentation showcasing the interns’ personal growth and future career goals.
“At MonHealth System, we are proud to invest in West Virginia’s future through programs like the WV Ready Summer Internship.” “We’re thrilled to be working with such a diverse team,” said Katie Davison, chief human resources officer for Mon Health System. “It was an honor to host 10 interns this summer and share with them the wide range of healthcare job opportunities available in West Virginia.”
