HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – There are only a few obstacles standing between former Evansville Police Chief Billy Bolin and his new role as Henderson Police Chief, but one of them is a test of his physical ability.
The police professional standards test includes bench press, sit-ups, push-up tests, a 1.5-mile run and a sprint – about the length of three football fields – in under 65 seconds. Bolin said the 300-meter sprint was the most nerve-wracking.
Officer Bolin said he will be doing a routine interview in Madisonville before taking over as police chief in early July, and that it feels surreal to even think about it, since he first started as a patrol officer in Henderson in 1995. The training officer at the time was current interim police chief Bob Scholz.
While training for the POPS exam, Bolin signed a three-month contract as a police consultant for HPD, a job he says gave him a good start getting to know the department and its officers.
The next police chief said he plans to make a transition next year and wants residents to know he is transparent, approachable and a promoter of community engagement.
