It’s critical that the stories of LGBTQ people and their families be told in Spanish-language media, which plays an important role in the lives of the more than 60 million Latinos living in the United States.
To ensure these stories are told, especially for transgender and non-binary Latinx people, GLAAD Media Institute’s Spanish and Latinx Media and Representation team is partnering with the Trans Wellness Center to present the Los Angeles LGBT Center We held the first event of its kind. march.
This bilingual event focused on training members, leaders, and advocates of the transgender and nonbinary community on how to engage with the media and amplify their messages. From his Spanish-language newscasts to his social media campaigns, he highlighted strategies that work locally and nationally, while forging connections to solidify mutual support.
Attendees included Monica Trasandes (GMI’s Senior Director of Spanish and Latinx Media), Mariana MarroquÃn (Director of the Trans Wellness Center), and Gabe González (GLAAD’s Spanish and Latinx Media Team). ), and community members representing The. Our training and conversation was followed by a toast where community members from news and entertainment media were joined by guests, including GLAAD President Sarah Kate Ellis, who spoke about the importance of LGBTQ representation in Spanish- and Latin-language media.
