June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month. Taking care of your brain is essential to living a balanced and healthy life. One of the best ways to take care of your brain is to control anxiety and depression. Dr. Stevie DeJuan Springer of Wise and Well appeared on New Mexico Living to share some mental health tips.
Springer explains that depression is primarily characterized by sadness and loss of interest, while anxiety is primarily characterized by excessive stress, worry, and fear. Although the components of depression and anxiety are very different, they both share common symptoms, such as irritability and insomnia.
Springer says addressing your gut microbiome is one way to support mental health. He recommends boosting it by taking magnesium and vitamin D supplements and eating kale, berries, salmon, kiwi, tuna, sardines, nuts and seeds, and fermented foods like kefir and kimchi. Feeding your gut with the right nutrients improves communication between your gut microbiome and your brain, sending signals that reduce anxiety and depression.
