David Beckham hopes his Netflix documentary will shed light on the importance of mental health.
The 49-year-old former football star faced a lot of criticism from fans and pundits during his playing days, but David hopes some lessons have been learned from the experience.
The former England captain, who will release Beckham in 2023, told Variety: “I think the takeaway from the documentary is how important mental health is, because 20 years ago no one was talking about it and no one was taking it seriously.”
“It’s really great that now people can actually talk about how they feel.”
David admitted he was hurt by some of the comments made about him and his wife Victoria.
He said: “For 27 years, a lot of things have been said about us. It can be hurtful.”
Despite this, David recognises he still has a lot to be grateful for.
“I’ve never been one to sit back and complain,” said the sporting icon, who previously played for Manchester United and Real Madrid.
“I’ve been so fortunate to have had this opportunity throughout my career, and I’m so grateful for that.”
Meanwhile, David admits he is proud of his children and insists they are not affected by their fame.
The football legend said all his children are “humble” and “passionate” people.
“They’re humble, they’re hardworking, they’re passionate. They’re driven. And at the end of the day, they’re good people,” said David, who has three children, Brooklyn, 25, Romeo, 21, Cruz, 19, and Harper, 12, with Victoria.
“If they had lived the lives they did, living in different countries and surrounded by the circus of events that happened in our lives, maybe their lives would have been different.”
