New applications and cloud connectivity are being added to physical access control systems around the world at an accelerating rate, including those that rely on biometrics, according to a new report on the field.
Genetec research shows that companies that purchase, manage, or deploy physical security technology plan to invest in different types of products in 2024.
More than 30% of enterprises plan to invest in access control and cybersecurity tools. 20-30% use video surveillance, asset and people tracking software, and incident management solutions to improve security. Facial recognition, intrusion detection, digital evidence management, and visitor management are the solutions selected by 15-20% of surveyed companies.
As a security software company, Genetec surveyed over 5,500 respondents covering all geographic regions. Respondents included not only end users, but also installers, manufacturers, and consultants working on physical security.
The survey also revealed other trends, including increased investment in cloud technology. In 2023, 44% of end users said more than a quarter of their physical security environment will be in the cloud or a hybrid cloud. This figure represents an increase from his 2022 year, when only 24% gave the same answer.
This trend is important because the cloud enables more AI-driven applications. More than 20% of end users say their organization has already integrated machine learning AI or large-scale language models (LLM) into physical security.
Despite these developments, the physical security industry still faces challenges such as increasing cyber threats, supply chain constraints, and human resources challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
BioConnect and Panpan launch new products
The rise of physical access controls is also spurring companies to develop new solutions.
Canadian biometrics and security company BioConnect has introduced a monthly subscription-based package designed to protect physical access points. The Trusted Identity Service includes a smartphone-sized device and facial recognition software platform that can be installed at building entrances.
This product does not require registration. The BioConnect team connects company profile photos provided by your human resources department or your existing physical access control system.
Another product comes from Pan Pan, a Chinese high-security door manufacturer owned by Assa Abloy Group. Blade Star smart doors use facial and fingerprint biometrics for unlocking. His two screens are also integrated into the door, allowing him to screen visitors and leave voice messages.
