Tucked away in BMC Wellness Center’s busy schedule are some gems that offer more than just fitness. It is important to foster bonds, share smiles, and work hard. I’m talking about none other than the senior women’s class. Age is just a number there, and laughter is the secret to staying young at heart.
This vibrant group is led by Beth Downs and Karen Murphy, who work together to guide women to better health. Beth takes the reins on Mondays and Fridays, while Karen takes charge every Wednesday. Each class begins at 9am. With an encouraging and welcoming attitude, these instructors strive each week to help the members of their classes feel more capable and empowered than before.
The Senior Women class includes 30 to 40 regulars, all of whom participate weekly to challenge outdated stereotypes. And if you want proof of their dedication, take a peek at the class at a designated time, such as on February 9, 2024. On this day, she had a whopping 35 women ready to tackle their fitness goals.
Now, let’s think about age groups. We’re talking about a range of ages 40 to 87. Yes, that’s right. I’m 87 years old. They don’t let numbers define their abilities or limit their potential. In fact, they are here to prove that age is just a seasoning that adds flavor to life’s adventures.
In addition to common issues like balance, flexibility, and cardiovascular health, these women are also learning the art of getting up. why? Because safety always comes first and we won’t take any risks to keep our footing.
Imagine a gathering where you can exercise your mental muscles as well as your physical ones. The Who’s Who Award is a weekly event where people share tidbits about their career, personal life, etc., and it’s a fun game where others try to guess who it is. Recipients take home a diary and a candy bar. Who said fitness needs a sweet treat once in a while?
But it’s not all games and profits. A deeper connection is felt between these women. From prayer requests to moments of sharing support, this is more than just a fitness class, it’s a sanctuary of togetherness. Just ask Tammy Steele. She said she finds comfort in the Christian support system that is woven into each session.
Let’s not forget Peggy Hubbard, a loyal attendee from the very beginning of class. For her, it’s more than just training. It is the highlight of her week and adds joy and vitality to her daily life.
Linda White observed that most people gather to spend time with friends and bond over food. Now they have dedicated time where they can spend quality, fun time together while focusing on their health and well-being instead. “We are lucky to have this facility here,” she said of the BMC Wellness Center. Like instructor Beth Downs, many women are grateful to Joseph Merchant for providing a gathering place for our community that can benefit everyone in so many ways. I wanted to thank you again for your efforts.
What’s special about this class is not just the exercises. It is a collective spirit of resilience, laughter, and unwavering support. If you are interested in participating, please stop by the BMC Wellness Center or call 205-926-3360. They look forward to meeting you!
