The Indian Embassy on Friday hosted the 10th International Yoga Day celebrations in the capital Ankara, highlighting the importance of the ancient practice of yoga and unity among people.
The event, which took place on the lawns of India House, was attended by eminent personalities from various walks of life, including heads of ministries and embassies, officials, expatriates and their families.
The yoga session began with an educational prayer and emphasised the spirit of unity and harmony inspired by ancient Indian yoga practices. This year’s theme was “Yoga for Self and Society” and emphasised the need for a holistic and balanced life, and the programme encouraged the practice of yoga and meditation in everyday life.
Speaking at the event, Chargé d’Affaires Alpana Dubey recognised yoga’s universal appeal and recalled that 10 years ago, on December 11, 2014, the United Nations declared June 21 as International Day of Yoga. She said yoga is a means to achieve inner peace and relaxation. “And finally, yoga helps us discover the infinity within us. Yoga will give us physical and mental strength over time,” she explained.
The event in Ankara is not the only opportunity for yoga enthusiasts. The Embassy has been organising similar events across the country with the active participation and support of numerous community organisations and yoga enthusiasts. Another event was held in Nevsehir, Cappadocia last week and another is scheduled to be held on Sunday in Yavuz Selim Meydani, Amasya.
Yoga originated in India over 5,000 years ago and gradually spread throughout the world. Today, yoga is practiced by millions of people around the world, including in Turkey.
