The Brewers are expected to sign Gary Sanchez to a one-year, $7 million contract due to apparent concerns about Sanchez’s right wrist after a physical, according to a report from The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. There is.
Rosenthal said Sanchez is expected to “accept a lower base salary with an incentive to earn his original $7 million if he stays healthy.” The deal also includes a mutual option for 2025.
The signing was first reported two weeks ago, but has not yet become official.
Sanchez, 31, is a nine-year veteran who spent the first seven years of his career with the Yankees. He spent 2022 with the Twins and 2023 with the Mets and Padres, but appeared in just three games with New York.
Sanchez played in 741 career games and is a batting average of .225/.309/.469 with 173 home runs, 448 RBIs, and 374 RBIs. Like Rhys Hoskins, another major league player who joined Milwaukee this winter, Sanchez is a power hitter with little defensive ability. Last season, Sanchez appeared in 72 games with the Padres, hitting .218/.292/.500 (116 OPS+) with 19 home runs and 46 RBIs.
The Brewers signed several catchers this offseason after the departure of Victor Caratini, adding Austin Nola, Eric Haas, and now Sanchez. They also have prospect Jefferson Kelo developing in the minors and is expected to get some minutes in spring training.
Haas and Sanchez both signed major league contracts, meaning they will be the main competition for catcher William Contreras’ backup this spring.
