The Women Impact Summit has appointed Kayode Akitemi, Managing Director of News Central Media Limited, as the Africa Mental Health Ambassador for her dedication and advocacy in addressing mental health issues across the continent.
The appointment is in recognition of his significant contributions to raising awareness and promoting initiatives aimed at improving the accessibility and support systems of mental health care in Africa, the statement said.
Akitemi’s appointment was announced just after the 2024 Africa Mental Health and Wellness Conference, hosted by the Women’s Impact Summit, was held in Abuja.
The group said the conference aimed to address challenges related to mental health in Nigeria.
In his remarks, Mr. Akitemi highly praised the leadership of the African Mental Health and Wellness Council, which won this award, and emphasized the need for collective efforts to promote mental health in Africa.
He also advocated for mental well-being and supported viable strategies to raise awareness, assuring continued commitment and support for it.
Co-founders of the Africa Council on Mental Health and Wellness, Dr. James Egwu and Dr. Utchai Odimus, commended Akintemi’s efforts to raise awareness about mental health and urged the public to invest in mental health and well-being in Africa. Appealed.
According to the Nigerian Association of Psychiatrists, more than 60 million Nigerians suffer from mental illness.
