A Greenwich home adjacent to a historic farm is for sale.
The 2.5-acre property, located at 36 French Road, was listed for sale in late January, according to listing information.
Houlihan Lawrence listing agent Ellen Mosher said in an email that the home is a “classic building in a traditional shingle style that surprises with a sun-drenched open concept plan,” and is more than 11 feet tall. He said it has high ceilings and high windows that enhance natural light. .
The property includes a six-bedroom shingle house, a two-bedroom guesthouse, a wellness/party barn, and even an in-ground pool and tennis court.
“It’s unusual to be less than five minutes from downtown Greenwich,” she says.
The home was built in 2000 and designed by Greenwich architects Jobe Moore of Jobe Moore & Partners and Laura Koehler of Laura Koehler Architects. Mr. Moore, a former Yale School of Architecture professor, was named one of the “Top 50 Residential Architects in America” by Residential Architect Magazine in 2010.
Decades ago, the property was part of a French farm, Mosher said. The farm, the first town property listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, was built in 1911 at 524 Lake Avenue and was built by a prominent figure in the conservation movement and the parents of an American heiress. It was owned by French couple John and Mary Billings. Mary French Rockefeller, according to previous reports.
Art collector David Wiersma inherited part of the farm from his parents in the early 1970s and divided the 30 acres among his four sons. His sons sold his shares, but Mr. Wiersma added his share to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, and it was later acquired by Greenwich Country Day School in 2019.
Mr Mosher said owners would be able to enjoy the property’s natural elements as most rooms open onto terraces or lanais.
The kitchen leads to a double height family room and breakfast room overlooking the pool. The upper floor includes a contemporary study with French doors to a private terrace, and his six bedrooms on the second floor, connected by a lounge and exercise room.
