Brian Wilson wrote such Beach Boys hits as “I Get Around,” “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” and “God Only Knows.”
Brian Wilson’s family has asked a Los Angeles court to place the Beach Boys star into a conservatorship.
According to court documents obtained by multiple US media outlets, the 81-year-old musician suffered from a “neurocognitive disorder” similar to dementia.
The move comes after Mr Wilson’s wife of 28 years, Melinda, died in January.
The family said the decision was made after “careful consideration and consultation” with Wilson, his doctors, his seven children and his housekeeper.
A doctor quoted in the document said Wilson was “easily distracted, although aware of his surroundings” and “often spontaneously makes unrelated or incoherent statements.”
The filing also says the singer is “unable to adequately meet his personal needs, including physical health, food, clothing, and shelter.”
At the time of writing, the BBC had not been able to independently verify the court documents, but the documents were first reported by US celebrity website The Blast and subsequently published by People Magazine, among others. ” and “The Wrap.”

Wilson’s family released a statement on Instagram: “This decision was made to avoid drastic changes to our family.”

Wilson is the co-founder and chief songwriter of the Beach Boys, who emerged as part of the surf rock boom in 1961 and built a reputation for sophisticated melodies and complex vocal harmonies.
After hits like Surfin’ USA, I Get Around, and California Girls, the emergence of the Beatles prompted Wilson to take the band in a more experimental and psychedelic direction.
His masterpiece was 1966’s Pet Sounds, widely considered one of the greatest rock albums of all time.

However, his drug use escalated, and combined with the pressure to continue producing ever more elaborate songs, he suffered a nervous breakdown and began to withdraw from touring and public appearances.
Wilson had previously been placed into a conservatorship once in the early 1990s, due to controversial psychologist Eugene’s alleged “undue influence” on his life, music and finances. The family fought to separate Wilson from Randy.
The case stems from a 1989 rewrite of Wilson’s will that named Lundy as the primary beneficiary, inheriting up to 70% of his estate.
By 1992, the Santa Monica Superior Court ruled that Landy must remove himself from Wilson’s life and appointed an independent conservator with “specific and limited authority over the artist’s affairs.” did.
Melinda was probably one of the main instigators of the trial. After her death last month, Wilson said on his website: “We were lost. Melinda was more than just my wife. She was my savior.”
The couple married in 1995 and adopted Dakota Rose, Dahlia Rose, Delaney Rose, Dylan, and Dash.
Wilson also has two daughters, Carnie and Wendy, from his first marriage.
