CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland Department of Public Health and the Cleveland Metropolitan School District Office of Responsibility and Action will host Teen Summit 2024 on Tuesday, March 5th.
The summit will be held at the East Professional Center, 1349 E. 79th St. in Cleveland.
Organizers say this is the first of several events designed to encourage Cleveland high school students to actively discuss important aspects of teen reproductive health.
Students will gain basic information about hours and services offered at the Department of Public Health’s Teen Wellness Clinic, explore safe, effective, and affordable contraceptive methods, and gain insights into building healthy relationships. Participate in subcommittee sessions that foster
This information is critical as sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise nationwide, especially in Cuyahoga County, where the increase in syphilis cases is more than double the national average. Additionally, Ohio is the only state in the nation without a standardized curriculum for health education.
More than 200 students participate in each summit.
The first event will include participants from six different high schools including John Adams, John F. Kennedy, Lincoln West, Max Hayes, LGBT Community Center School of One, and MC2STEM .
High schools will take turns participating to ensure important medical information is shared with as many students as possible.
“We’re giving teens the tools they need to protect themselves from sexually transmitted infections, unwanted pregnancies, and dangerous or forced relationships,” said the director of nursing at the Department of Public Health. Jeannie Johnson Brooks said.
