New Delhi: Ignoring the subtle pain, joint pain, stiffness and swelling that are common symptoms of osteoarthritis can have a major impact on mobility, health experts said Wednesday.
Millions of people around the world suffer from osteoarthritis (OA), the most common form of arthritis.
This condition primarily affects weight-bearing joints such as the hands, knees, hips, and spine.
As we age, degenerative diseases affect our mobility and daily life due to the deterioration of cartilage.
Although cases of joint pain have increased significantly, the majority tend to ignore it as a part of aging, increasing the risk of further complications, said joint replacement surgeons at Manipal Hospital in New Delhi. Dr Rajeev Verma told IANS. .
“Osteoarthritis often develops gradually. Don’t ignore subtle pain and stiffness as a normal part of aging. To effectively manage this condition and maintain mobility, “Early detection and intervention is critical,” he said.
Doctors say that in the early stages, pain, tenderness and joint stiffness tend to be limited to very specific times of the day, such as early in the morning or after high-impact physical activity. However, as the condition progresses, patients may experience pain even when they are resting or doing simple household tasks.
“The disease remains a challenge in India as patients often consult doctors when the joint damage is quite advanced.Osteoarthritis is a progressive condition, so in advanced cases, “It is often not possible to reverse the damage sustained without joint replacement surgery,” Dr. Verma said.
“The main goals of treatment options for osteoarthritis are to control symptoms and strengthen joint function. This includes taking NSAIDs and painkillers, as well as physical therapy to improve joint strength and mobility. These include lifestyle changes such as therapy, weight management techniques, painful injections, joint replacement surgery in extreme situations, and the use of assistive technology to reduce strain on the joints.” Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Max Hospital, Vaishali・Director of Joint Replacement Department told IANS.
She pointed out that women are more susceptible to the disease than men, especially after menopause.
To prevent or delay the onset of osteoarthritis, “eat a balanced diet rich in important nutrients, manage a healthy weight, and strengthen muscles and improve joint flexibility.” exercise frequently to prevent joint damage and use proper ergonomics when performing daily tasks. the doctor said.
