Suggestion 1March 5, 2024, authorizes $6.38 billion in bonds to build mental health treatment facilities for people with mental health and substance use issues and provide housing for the homeless. Voting is scheduled to take place in the primary election on the same day.
If registered voters vote yes, the county would have to place more emphasis on housing and personal support services, as well as providing mental health care and drug and alcohol treatment services. A “yes” vote would allow the state to build more places for people in housing need and provide more places to get help for mental health care and drug and alcohol treatment. would be helpful.
If voters vote “no,” the county would not have to make any changes to its medical and treatment services. States will no longer be able to borrow up to $6.4 billion to build places for people in need.
Currently, there are not enough places in California where people can get proper treatment and care. Many people are waiting or cannot get care in the right place. As of January 2022, 171,500 people were experiencing homelessness in California, including 10,400 veterans.
“We strongly believe that Prop. 1 will have a positive impact on our community, especially with the negative stigma surrounding homelessness. Mental health is a huge issue that can lead people to mistakes and ultimately lead to homelessness. “People need to understand that,” said Heidi Santiago, a fourth-year political science major at California State University, Bakersfield, who focuses on pre-law, power and justice.
Proposition 1 would give the government $2 billion to convert motels, hotels and other buildings into housing. The new homes will be for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness, or who have mental health, drug or alcohol problems.
“More mental health facilities would provide low-income communities with the resources they need to seek help and hopefully help reduce homelessness rates,” Santiago continued.
The $4.4 billion would go toward building more mental health treatment facilities. Currently, California doesn’t have enough places for people struggling with these challenges to go, leaving many without the care they need.
Adriana Rodriguez, a fourth-year CSUB agricultural business major, said: That’s because, as you know, there are a lot of people who suffer from mental illness as well as substance abuse. This new proposal will have a positive impact on the healthcare system by providing access and services to people suffering from mental and material problems. ”
State programs are moving forward, and just $2 billion is about to launch this Proposition 1 campaign. They are currently building more places, such as psychiatric hospitals, where people can receive the most intensive treatment and care.
“Proposition 1 can be very beneficial to people who are suffering from financial hardship or hardship in life. Proposition 1 can create an outlet for them to find solace. It can also help them solve their problems. It’s also a place where you can look for mental health access and benefits,” said Santino Sanchez, a second-year business administration major at CSUB.
The state program’s new building will provide a short-term place to stay for people undergoing drug and alcohol treatment. They can obtain housing while in the transition phase from intensive mental health care to a lower level of care.
The proposed use of $6.4 billion in bond funds for this proposal is divided into two sections. About 30 percent ($2 billion) will go to housing and about 70 percent ($4.4 billion) to places of treatment.
The proposal will appear on the primary election ballot on March 5, 2024, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
