Singing River Health System held a discussion on addressing mental health this morning at Hard Rock Casino and Resort.
Singing River hosted a panel discussion about the struggle with mental health and the best ways to overcome it.
A panel of six physicians approached the issue from an adult and adolescent perspective.
Keynote speaker Emma Benoit shared her story of a suicide attempt that left her with a spinal cord injury. Her injuries left her paralyzed.
Benoit shared her story of battling depression and anxiety as a young adult and her journey to help others in the same position. “Today is a really good opportunity for us to really learn and re-educate ourselves about something that no one knows about, probably most people will never know about, because of its stigma and taboo. It’s a great opportunity to really learn better ways to have conversations and communicate about health.”
said Dr. Randy Ross, Singing River’s Chief Medical Officer. Well, go to the emergency room and say you’re thinking of self-harm. It’s not a good situation right now. And let’s find a safety net for everyone. ”
Benoit currently leads an innovative program called “My Ascension” that supports the education of young people dealing with mental health issues.
