How can a man protect his wife apart from physical strength?
In this episode of “Catholic Gentlemen,” John Heinen, Sam Guzman, and Devin Shutt discuss three ways men can cherish their wives.
1) Using emotional stability as a shield.
When a man effectively manages his emotions, he creates a safe space for his wife.
“We need to protect our wives from the personal war we wage against ourselves,” Shutt says.
By protecting his wife from stress and frustration in a healthy way, a man can help her feel more secure and build a more supportive marriage.
2) Be consistent.
Having a calm presence during times of distress is incredibly reassuring.
“Life is full of anxiety. If I had said, ‘Oh, this is so inconvenient,’ her anxiety would have skyrocketed,” Guzman said.
This consistency acts as a pillar of strength that you can rely on to gain greater confidence and peace as you go through difficulties together.
3) Demonstrate kindness as a virtue.
Being attentive to needs, having empathy, and offering genuine support are powerful virtues.
“Women want emotional strength in men,” Devin says. “Does that mean we just close ourselves off and become these super tough, emotionless cold guys? No. But it does mean that our emotions are well-regulated.”
Gentlemen say embracing these aspects of strength is a great way to transform a Catholic marriage.

“Husbands, Love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself for it, cleansing it with the washing of water by the word, making it holy.
“That he might present before himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing, that it should be holy and without blemish” (Ephesians 5:25-27).
