Canadians and the internet are a match made in digital heaven. As well as staying up to date with the latest news, people are also using the web to dig deeper into news headlines, especially when it comes to health news.
This week, there has been a more than 5,000 per cent increase in web searches for the latest information on a “mysterious brain disease” that is reportedly affecting New Brunswick residents.
What is this “mysterious brain disease” that’s making headlines in New Brunswick?
In 2021, the provincial government launched an investigation into a “peculiar atypical neurological syndrome” in which 48 people reportedly experienced a range of symptoms, including muscle spasms, visual hallucinations, drooling and the feeling that bugs were crawling on their skin.
New Brunswick Public Health closed its investigation in 2022, saying the patients “should not have been identified as having a neurological syndrome of unknown cause” and that they had “known neurological conditions” that could explain their symptoms.
In 2023, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) deployed two epidemiologists to the province after a neurologist in Moncton claimed the number of cases had risen to 147 and that patients were in an “advanced stage of clinical deterioration.”
Canadian microbiologists claim they have been hindered in their investigation of the disease. Parents The report said leaked emails from federal scientist Michael Colesart showed him claiming cases were increasing.
“What I’m saying is, my scientific opinion is that something is actually going on. [New Brunswick] It can in no way be explained by the biases or personal agendas of individual neurologists.” Parents “There are some cases that are best explained by the latter, but there are too many (currently over 200),” Kohlsaert wrote.
Coltheart allegedly told PHAC members in October 2023 that he had been “effectively removed” from the investigation. Parents In the leaked emails, Colesart reportedly said he believed the cause was “an environmental exposure, or combination of exposures” that could “cause or accelerate a range of neurodegenerative syndromes.”
What is the state of Halsey’s health?
On June 5, Halsey took to Instagram to announce the release of her new album and say she’s “blessed to be alive.” In a follow-up post shared on Wednesday, she revealed that she was diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in 2022. SLE is the most common type of lupus, and is also a “rare T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder.”
The news led to a more than 5,000 percent surge in web traffic seeking more information about her health.
According to the Lupus Foundation of America, SLE is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in various organs and systems. Symptoms include skin rashes, painful and swollen joints, swollen hands and feet, fatigue, and low-grade fever.
Approximately 70% of people with systemic lupus erythematosus have SLE. Although it is chronic, symptoms may periodically disappear. If left untreated, inflammation can lead to organ damage, seizures, memory loss, confusion, and coronary artery disease. The exact cause of systemic lupus erythematosus is unknown, but women between the ages of 15 and 44 and members of certain ethnic groups are at higher risk of developing the disease.
Lymphoproliferative disorders cause the uncontrolled production of white blood cells called lymphocytes. Halsey did not specify what type of lymphoproliferative disorder it was, but common symptoms of the group of disorders include anemia, weakness, weight loss, excessive bleeding, bone pain, frequent infections, swollen lymph nodes, and an enlarged spleen or liver.
“Both illnesses are currently under management or in remission but I will likely be living with them for the rest of my life,” the 29-year-old wrote. “It was difficult at first but with the help of some amazing doctors I slowly got everything under control. Two years later I’m feeling better and more grateful than ever to have music to fall back on my side. I can’t wait to get back to where I belong – amongst you all.”
When is Men’s Health Month?
This week, web searches related to Men’s Health Month increased by 2,300 percent – every June, men are encouraged to be proactive about their health and learn more about diseases that disproportionately affect men.
According to McMaster University, men visit the doctor less frequently, which could have a big impact on the chances of early detection of heart disease, diabetes and prostate cancer.
The Canadian Men’s Health Foundation has found that approximately 80% of premature heart disease and strokes can be prevented through diet and lifestyle changes and regular visits with a doctor who can monitor changes in your health. As men age, they may experience erectile dysfunction, which may be linked to high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. It can also have a serious impact on their mental health. Staying up to date on symptoms and risk factors, and discussing treatment options for diseases, can help men age as healthily as possible.
