What if there was a convenient way to get free mental health support any time of the day or night to help you cope with work or relationship stress? Or contact a money coach for tips on how to get out of debt? Can I access it?
You may already have access to that help and more through an Employee Assistance Program or what’s commonly referred to as an EAP.
Many companies offer EAPs, but relatively few employees use them. Often, an employee is not aware of the various services provided within her EAP. But now more companies are turning to EAPs to extend support to employees and their families.
“EAPs have long been ignored because many people who are eligible for these benefits are unaware that they are receiving them,” UnitedHealthcare Employer said Dr. Rhonda Randall, Chief Medical Officer for Individuals. “EAPs can be a quick way to access financial, legal, or behavioral health support.”
For example, some EAPs include the ability for individuals to speak with a behavioral health professional 24 hours a day, on an as-needed basis. EAP Specialists not only have unlimited support, but they can also provide personalized guidance in real time, without long waits, whether you’re looking for community support and resources or are ready to engage with a therapist. .
Enterprise EAP tools and resources provide 24/7 support for a wide range of issues, including:
- Managing stress, anxiety and depression
- Improve relationships at home and at work
- Get advice on legal and financial concerns
- Coping with occupational stress and burnout
- Addressing substance use issues
3 more things you need to know
1. Help can be personalized
EAP support often begins with a free call to a specialist for immediate assistance. After listening to your specific concerns, a specialist will introduce you to the services available with your plan.
2. Information is confidential
Although the majority of EAPs are now managed by third parties, even EAPs managed by enterprises still adhere to strict confidentiality standards to ensure privacy.
3. You may be able to receive free counseling
An EAP may include several mental health visits. For example, UnitedHealthcare EAP provides eligible members with three free counseling sessions per year per issue and unlimited emotional support from behavioral health professionals.
“Sometimes the hardest thing is to make that first call in that moment,” Dr. Randall said. “EAPs can be a private and confidential starting point. Many of the people you talk to right now have a great deal of experience and can help you find a solution to the problem you are facing or help you with your care. I will call back a second or third time to ask for additional advice.”
