Harrisburg’s new gym offers something for everyone.
The Jewish Federation of Greater Harrisburg recently opened the new Simmons Family Fitness Center at the Alexander Glass Campus for Jewish Life.
The Jewish Federation of Greater Harrisburg will relocate to its Alexander Glass campus at 2986 N. 2nd St. in August 2023 and has been expanding its services at the location since then. Federation officials said the federation’s previous N. Front St. location featured a fitness center, which inspired the organization to update its new campus with the same amenities.
The 11,750-square-foot space features state-of-the-art bikes, treadmills, ellipticals, free weights, weight machines, and personal trainers. There are two locker rooms with saunas, family and unisex changing rooms, and studio space for group and personal training sessions. Classes offered include yoga, spin, strength training, and dance.
“This new space allows us to offer a completely different facility that better represents what this community looks like on the outside and who we are on the inside,” board chairwoman Abby Smith said. “It’s a testament to the way the Jewish community has evolved, and the Harrisburg community as a whole, has evolved to meet different needs.”

The gym, which opened Monday, is located on the second floor of the Glass Center Building, the campus’ most central building.
Individual membership fees start at $35 per month, and the gym is open to people of all faiths, backgrounds and abilities.
“We have something for everyone, whether you’re a fitness guru or just starting out in fitness, any age,” Smith said.
The fitness center also offers programs for specific target groups, including classes for young children, seniors and people with Parkinson’s disease.
“This facility has everything you need to achieve your health and wellness goals, regardless of age or ability,” says new Health and Wellness Director Susanna Gillespie, “But this fitness center is more than just weights and treadmills — it’s a place to build friendships, challenge yourself and find support on your wellness journey.”
The gym is named in honor of Adam Simmons, who passed away in 2009, and his father, Steven Simmons, who passed away in early 2024. Active members of Harrisburg’s Jewish community, Adam and Steven were both avid fitness and wellness enthusiasts.
“It was really exciting to have a space that will always be associated with their name,” Smith said. “It’s a space that Adam’s mother walked into and said, ‘This is a space Adam would have loved.’ It’s a new chapter for Harrisburg in terms of honoring the past while also thinking about what the future holds.”
