A recently opened fitness facility on W. Water Street in Hellertown will be hosting a grand opening ceremony this Saturday, July 6. Everyone is welcome to attend.
The event at Saucon Creek Fitness will begin with a gym tour at 8 a.m., followed by a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workout in the open gym starting at 9 a.m. A local DJ will start playing music at 10 a.m., and there will also be games and snacks available.
The event will feature food and drinks from Smoothie & T Bar, which also recently opened on W. Water Street, and Rachel’s Place Food Truck in Quakertown, which will be serving coffee and breakfast until noon.
Additionally, guests who purchase a membership to Saucon Creek Fitness will receive a 10 percent discount.
The gym is owned by four partners: Hellertown residents Kurt Miller, Scott Unger, Frank Unger and Bill Pratt.
Miller, a Quakertown native and former college athlete, is the face of the business and is most involved in its day-to-day operations. He has plenty of experience in the field as co-owner with his wife of South Mountain Community Fitness in Allentown. Miller’s sister, Lindsey Murray, is also involved in fitness and is a local entrepreneur who opened a business called Move ‘n Play in Coopersburg last year.
Scott Unger is the former owner of CrossFit Threefold in Coopersburg, Miller said during a recent tour of the facility, which is housed in a former lumber store.
“Your zone away from home” is how Miller describes the concept of Saucon Creek Fitness, which is open to members 24/7 through an app that offers keyless entry, access to online workouts and more.
Between 60 and 70 percent of the boutique facility’s equipment is for functional training, and the intimate atmosphere creates the feeling of a high-end private gym in a basement or garage, without the cold and proximity to potential distractions that home gym-goers often encounter.
Miller defined functional training as a style of exercise at various intensities where “your body drives the machine.” For example, unlike traditional plug-in treadmills, Saucon Creek Fitness’ treadmills are powered solely by the rider.
A local resident who recently toured the gym defined functional training differently.
“Push, pull, hinge, carry, squat” is how Tina Reichardt characterizes her popular fitness style.
Miller said the ultimate goal of functional training is not just to improve physique but to increase strength in order to lead a more active and healthier lifestyle.
Miller said access will be limited to a maximum of eight people at a time to maintain Saucon Creek Fitness’ “ultimate garage gym” feel.
Personal training is also offered to members, and the company is actively seeking partnerships with local trainers interested in expanding its customer base.
Another perk members receive is access to an infrared sauna, located in a small room adjacent to the main training area.
Miller said they plan to eventually offer group fitness classes on weekends for up to six people at a time.
After all, he said it’s important to him to be involved in the Hellertown community, where he and his wife are raising their family and where one of his businesses is currently based.
“We want (Saucon Creek Fitness) to feel like an extension of the community,” he explained.
