BEECH ISLAND, S.C. (WJBF) – Day One Fitness is a non-profit organization that helps people with neurological diseases and disabilities through high-intensity exercise.
In this episode of “Your Hometown Road Trip,” the team stopped by the facility to speak with Executive Director Daniel Williams about the facility and what it does for the community.
What is Day One Fitness?
“We’re a specialty gym, so we cater to a very unique population. Our classes are high intensity in nature and specific to people with neurological conditions. Our core classes, our boxing classes, are high intensity and get your heart rate up. All the studies have shown that heart rate can slow the progression of these conditions, so that’s what we’re aiming to do here. We have a variety of classes that address a variety of different things, like range of motion, falls and fall prevention, to make sure you’re working your muscles.”
Why is it important to have a place like this?
“It’s important to come here for classes like this. First of all, there’s a great sense of community here, so we’re all going through the same things as everyone else and we can rely on each other. It’s a warm and welcoming environment.”
How long have you been here and how do people react when they come?
“We’ve been around since 2015, but we took over this location in 2018. I don’t think people expect to walk in and see such a big space and see people working out. The first time I did a workout, I had no idea what to expect.”
How can the community help?
“One of the best ways to help us is to volunteer. Come and help with classes or donate money to show your support. Not just your time, but to help keep the lights on, pay for operating costs and get the word out that we’re here, because there are a lot of community members who don’t know we’re here.”
Day One Fitness wants to spread the word about what they do and continue to help those in need.
