Author Talk: Author Jocelyn Takacs will speak about her new book, “Pearce Oysters,” on July 11 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Milton H. Rutter Memorial Library, 5120 St. Charles Ave. The family drama is set on the Louisiana coast following the historic 2010 oil spill and follows the Pearce family, local oyster farmers whose business, family and livelihood are on the brink of collapse.
“Pierce’s Oysters” delves deep into the bonds of family, culture, class and industry, elevating relatable characters like Jordan, the reluctant head of his family’s famous oyster company, his grieving widowed mother Mae and his brother Benny, a beatnik musician who returns from New Orleans in a time of crisis.
Takacs, now based in California, was living in New Orleans at the time of the oil spill and received a grant in 2015 to record oral histories of Louisiana oyster farmers in the aftermath of the environmental disaster.
