Columbia, Missouri (KMIZ)
A woman accused of killing a University of Missouri student in January 2023 will remain in the custody of the Department of Mental Health at least until her next hearing, according to court records.
Emma Adams, 22, is charged with second-degree murder, armed criminal action, tampering with physical evidence and abandoning a body.
According to court records on Casenet, the order for continued detention was filed Thursday, and the forensic evaluation was reported on Tuesday, June 4. A hearing on the DMH motion is scheduled for Monday, June 17, at 1:30 pm in Boone County Court.
Adams was admitted to DMH in November but waited until May to be evaluated.
She remains on the Boone County Jail roster and has been held on $1 million bail since her arrest.
An investigation that began at the University of Missouri led to police discovering a burned body in a residential area far from campus, and Adams was arrested and charged in January 2023.
Police were initially unable to identify the body due to its condition. It was eventually identified as Samuel Clemons, 21 years old.
The investigation began when University of Missouri police officers were dispatched to Hudson Hall for a welfare check at approximately 5:30 p.m. on January 11, 2023, and arrived at the 2400 block of Bentley Court in North Columbia. Officers discovered a body there and requested Columbia Police investigate the incident as a homicide, according to a social media post from the Columbia Police Department.
Adams told police he stabbed Clemons in self-defense.
