Non-invasive health detection and monitoring technology analyzes voice biomarkers to indicate a user’s ongoing cognitive efficiency.
Boston, July 30, 2024–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Sonde Health extends its leading health monitoring platform beyond mental and respiratory fitness with the introduction of an innovative cognitive fitness tracker, allowing users to monitor their brain activity and therefore cognitive effort in real-time. The new solution, called Sonde Cognitive Fitness, analyzes eight voice characteristics from a 30-second voice interaction and generates a score to provide insights into the user’s cognitive state, enabling them to effectively manage their mental health and productivity.
By tracking cognitive performance, individuals can identify and monitor their cognitive effort levels and take steps to optimize productivity and performance, reducing cognitive burden and enhancing well-being.
Sonde Cognitive Fitness was launched at a time when nearly one in five people over the age of 50 worldwide suffers from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and more than 55 million people worldwide have dementia, a figure predicted to nearly triple by 2050. In early July, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a second drug designed to delay the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, drawing attention to the importance of early intervention to slow cognitive decline.
“This convenient, non-invasive cognitive fitness tracking solution is a natural fit for Sonde, as we are currently the only company analyzing and monitoring audio biomarkers for three key functions of the body: cognition, mind, and respiratory,” said Sonde CEO David Liu. “Sonde Cognitive Fitness is not a diagnostic tool; rather, it assesses a user’s current cognitive effort through their speech and provides early clues about their health, for example, if their cognitive fitness score is consistently low when performing simple tasks.”
Users can passively monitor their cognitive state using a 30-second voice sample collected by most smart devices. Sonde Cognitive Fitness then measures the user’s voice biomarkers and generates a brief score that reflects their current cognitive effort. A score of 80-100 is classified as “efficient” (low cognitive effort), 70-79 as “balanced” (medium cognitive effort), and 0-69 as “demanding” (high cognitive effort).
Sonde Cognitive Fitness is designed for easy integration via application programming interfaces (APIs) and software development kits (SDKs). A strong verification process ensures that voice samples are only collected from users who register and consent, and no audio is stored on or transmitted from the device to protect privacy.
To develop the tool, Sonde partnered with GN Group and clinical cognitive disorder experts from leading academic medical centers, including Massachusetts General Hospital and Montefiore Medical Center at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, to conduct multiple research studies. These studies included approximately 700 elderly study participants whose cognitive abilities were characterized using the Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Assessment (ACE), Blessed Dementia Scale, and Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) scales. Sonde’s cognitive fitness scores were consistent with these traditional assessments.
