The Producers Guild of America (PGA) announced a new initiative aimed at guaranteeing health insurance benefits to all eligible producers working full-time in the film and television industry. The initiative was announced by PGA presidents on Sunday night. Stephanie Alleyne and donald deline At the 35th PGA Awards in Los Angeles.
Production companies Blumhouse, Legendary, Macro and Berlanti Productions have already pledged support for this historic medical initiative.
“Producers, unlike the industry’s unionized creative professionals, do not have guaranteed health insurance benefits. They should not live without these important benefits. “It’s a rewarding enough job without the added anxiety of how to get health insurance for yourself and your family,” said PGA Chairman Alan and De Line.
The PGA further elaborated in a statement: “The Guild will provide all production companies (including studios and streamers) with qualified producers with PGA-recognized credits who are working full-time on eligible projects in the following ways: (1) eligible producers of covered works, and (2) all other producers who do not have access to benefits through existing industrial plans or union contracts (including direct payments to works). (including items) through the Motion Picture Industry Pension and Health Insurance Plan, which provides a budget for producers to purchase their own health insurance.”
Presidents Alleyne and Deline also defended the participation of the first production company to pledge support.
“The Producers Guild Healthcare Initiative is an opportunity for our industry to support producers and pave the way for future generations,” said Alleyne and Deline. “We applaud Blumhouse, Legendary, Macro and Berlanti Productions for taking this groundbreaking first step, and encourage all production companies across the industry to join this important movement.”
“Producers are the only group of creative professionals without unions on set, so we have to look out for each other,” said Jason Blum, CEO and founder of Blumhouse. It’s good for business, good for families and good for the industry, and I’m proud to be part of the group leading this effort.”
According to the PGA, the movement was started by PGA member Harvey Wilson and gained momentum as a top priority for the PGA under the leadership of former PGA presidents Gail Berman and Lucy Fisher. “This will help close the health benefits gap faced by many producers,” the group said.
