Miami-Dade County, Florida Miami-Dade County police arrested a 72-year-old retiree for stabbing another man in a gym locker room on Thursday, and it apparently all started with the victim using a chair.
The incident happened just after 8 a.m. at LA Fitness, 14100 SW Eighth St., near the Tamiami neighborhood.
According to the arrest report, the victim told police she had just gotten out of the shower when Steven Bussert approached her and appeared to be “angry about her using a chair in the shower.”
Police said Bassert, of western Miami-Dade County, approached the victim in an aggressive manner and the victim told Bassert he was “protecting himself.”
Police said Bassert began punching the victim, but the victim was able to subdue him. During the struggle, the victim realized he had been stabbed in the abdomen, the report said.
According to the report, an LA Fitness employee told police he entered the locker room to find the naked victim holding down a clothed Bassert and “holding a knife just out of reach.”
Employees took the knife away from both men and called police, and witnesses later told police they saw Bassert with a knife in his hand before the stabbing.
Authorities took Bassert into custody on suspicion of first-degree aggravated assault with a deadly weapon inflicting great bodily injury.
He was being held at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on $7,500 bail as of Friday afternoon.
