Mindfulness has been studied for a variety of medical and psychological conditions, including chronic pain, anxiety, diabetes, depression, cancer, heart disease, and stress. Recognizing the many benefits for physical and mental health, Midcoast Hospital offers a variety of wellness programs to help community members at all levels begin and maintain a mindfulness practice. doing.
Mindfulness-based stress reduction
It is normal to feel stress in everyday life. How you choose to respond to that stress determines its impact on your overall health and well-being. Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) is an educational program developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn. This curriculum is designed to help participants cultivate mindfulness through direct practice of meditation, mindful movement, instruction, and conversation. MBSR is his 8 week course taught in 2.5 hour group classes each week and one of his 6 hour retreats on the weekends. Participants are also encouraged to practice at home for approximately 45 minutes per day.
Continuous practice of mindfulness-based stress reduction
These one-hour monthly classes provide ongoing teacher-led practice and reflection opportunities for those who have already completed the eight-week MBSR program. Classes focus on guided practices (mindful movement, seated meditation, walking meditation, body scan), discussion of the practice’s relevance to our lives, and support for ongoing home practice. Mindfulness-based stress reduction for teens
A seven-week training aimed at reducing symptoms of stress and anxiety, improving overall mental health, and improving coping skills to deal with everyday stress in adolescents.
Mindful Morning Mini Retreat
These three-hour mini-retreats provide an introduction to mindfulness for beginners and an opportunity to deepen your practice for those with all levels of experience. We combine mindfulness-based exercises, meditation, and movement (stretching and gentle yoga) to discuss the principles of mindfulness and their connection to stress in our lives.

These 30-minute drop-in classes provide an opportunity to practice mindfulness for all levels of experience. Practices vary from week to week and may include mindful movement (gentle stretching or yoga), sitting meditation, walking meditation, body scans, and more. No registration is required and no prior experience is required. We invite you to join us for an opportunity to pause, notice, and reflect in the middle of your day.
Summer Meditation Session – Free
A one-hour mindfulness practice session outdoors among the beautiful pine forests of Midcoast Hospital’s campus. Each session consists of mindful stretching, walks in nature, meditation, and discussion. Beginners welcome! Chairs are provided, but please bring your favorite outdoor chair. Participants in each session will be limited to 20 people. Registration required.

With a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Midcoast Hospital has partnered with Maine NAMI to provide free youth mental health first aid education to the community, including all middle schools and high schools. Designed specifically for those who work with youth ages 12 to 18, this national certification program is packed with information to help you identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health concerns.
Youth mental health first aid This class helps people understand typical adolescent development and the signs and symptoms of potential mental health concerns. The topics are well researched and the lessons are easy to understand and formatted to address both bias and how non-experts can help. After completing the 8-hour course, you will receive a 3-year national certification. Youth Mental Health First Aider. Grants/scholarships are available for middle school and high school teachers.
Attend a youth mental health first aid training session
Youth Mental Health First Aid educates everyone who interacts with youth on a regular basis how to help youth (ages 12-18) who are experiencing or in crisis with mental health or substance use issues. It is intended for teaching purposes. This course introduces common mental health challenges in youth, provides an overview of typical youth development, and provides her five-step action plan for how to help youth in both crisis and non-crisis situations. I will teach you. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders.
