The Diabetes Nursing Association has launched an insulin comparison chart to help people with diabetes choose the product that is best for them.
The Diabetes Specialist Nurse (DSN) Forum UK has produced a table that provides an overview of the different insulin and infusion devices in a concise format.
According to DSN Forum UK, this new resource will help clinicians in their daily roles and improve patient safety. Additionally, this chart helps reduce prescribing and dosing errors.
The insulin table, titled ‘Types of insulin and medicines available in the UK’, is a three page document.
The first page contains information about each insulin and its available medical forms, and insulins are categorized by their actions.
We provide an overview on page 2 of all insulins available in prefilled pen devices, categorized by manufacturer.
Meanwhile, page 3 shows all insulin available in cartridges for use with reusable cartridge pens, categorized by manufacturer.
Vicky Arabraba, director of DSN Forum UK, said: “There are a variety of insulins available in the UK. Not all insulins are available on all devices, which can be confusing and difficult to remember the details of the different insulins available.
“In recent years, more and more biosimilar insulins have become available, and some older insulins have been discontinued, creating challenges for clinicians involved in prescribing and administering insulin.”
She added: “We found there were no up-to-date resources that provided information about different insulins and dosing devices in a concise format, so we decided to put together our own resource.”
This chart is updated regularly as new insulins and device changes occur. This document was reviewed by representatives from various insulin manufacturers, but no sponsorship was received for its development.
